Gone! by The Cure, 1996

Brandon’s white hand holding a CD case in the sunlight. It’s ‘Gone!’ by The Cure and features a macro image of a small figure holding a green wind up toy, wearing a yellow sweater and green hat.

Formed in 1978 in Crawley, West Sussex, @thecure are an English rock band with a career spanning over 40 years, said to be one of the godfathers for the Gothic subculture, though lead singer Robert Smith disputes this fact. It was after their 1982 album ‘Pornography’, which introduced a more pop flavour to their music, that they received mainstream success and worldwide acclaim.

The song on this CD, ‘Gone!’, comes from their tenth studio album ‘Wild Mood Swings’ and was the 4th and final single to be released from it in 1996. It reached number 60 on the UK Singles Chart, so not their most successful hit and it’s still one that divides fans today.

Personally, I really like the track. I haven’t listened to any of their music before so I have nothing to compare it too, but it has a very jazzy feel to it and the control Robert Smith has over his vocal is incredible, rising and dipping between different notes. The CD contains 3 remixes and the ‘Critter Mix’ is definitely my favourite, giving the song a psychedelic spin.

I have to mention the album artwork by @vella.andy too because I think it’s really cool and definitely fits the alternative style of the song. I love the bright colours and use of light and shadow. Andy has worked with The Cure on their album artwork since he was in art school, his first commission for their song ‘Primary’ in 1981.
